What is a VPS?
A VPS (Virtual Private Server) is a virtual server that runs on a powerful physical machine. The physical server is divided into multiple fully isolated virtual servers, each operating completely independently. Unlike shared hosting, your VPS runs in a fully isolated environment. With a VPS you have full root access and the freedom to choose your own operating system, software, and configuration. This gives you the flexibility and control of a dedicated server at the affordability of a virtual environment.
What can you use a VPS for?
A VPS is suitable for a wide range of applications. Whether you run a website, develop applications, or host a game server, a VPS gives you the resources and control you need. Common use cases include websites, web shops and CMS platforms, web applications, APIs and SaaS platforms, development and staging environments, Docker containers and microservices, game servers (Minecraft, Valheim, and more), VPN servers, and database servers.
What is the difference between VPS hosting and shared hosting?
With shared hosting, you share server resources with other users. This is fine for smaller websites, but as your site grows you will run into limitations. With VPS hosting, you get a fully isolated server environment with root access, your own operating system, and scalability to match your needs.
Can I install Windows?
Yes, you can manually install Windows Server using an image that we provide for evaluation purposes. Please note that Windows licenses are not included by default. Currently, our primary focus is on support for Linux.
What type of virtualization is used?
Our VPS platform is built on OpenStack and uses KVM virtualization. This ensures fully isolated virtual servers with high performance and strong security. KVM is an enterprise-grade virtualization technology and is well suited for workloads such as websites, online stores, applications, and containers.
What are the performance VPS specifications?
Most of our performance VPS servers use the AMD Ryzen 9 7900 CPUs for excellent single-core and multi-core performance. Some servers use AMD Ryzen 9 5900X and AMD Ryzen 9 3900X CPUs. In addition, our performance VPS servers have local NVMe SSD storage for ultra-fast I/O and a network connection of up to 10 Gbit.
Can I upgrade my VPS?
Yes, you can upgrade your VPS at any time to add more CPU power, memory, or storage. You can also switch between a standard VPS and a performance VPS (or the other way around).
Can I add extra storage to my VPS?
Yes, you can add extra SSD storage at any time with storage volumes. Create a volume from the control panel, from 10 GB up to 1 TB, and attach it to any server you like. A volume costs €0.07 per GB per month and can be cancelled at any time. If you prefer more local storage, you can also upgrade your VPS to a bigger plan.
How much do snapshots cost?
Snapshot storage is free up to half the total disk size of your VPSes. For example, if you have a VPS with 80 GB of storage, you can keep up to 40 GB of snapshots for free. If you need more space, you can easily buy extra storage for €0.03 per GB per month. You can restore a snapshot to your server or use it as the base for a new VPS.
Does CheeseHosting have an API?
Yes, you can manage your VPS infrastructure through our REST API. Create servers, rebuild them, power them on and off, and manage firewalls, private networks and SSH keys: almost everything you can do in the control panel is also available through the API. You create API tokens in the control panel, and the full documentation is available at docs.cheesehosting.net.
Do I get full root access to my VPS?
Yes, you get full root access to your VPS, giving you complete control over the server. You can install and configure software, manage users, fine-tune security settings, and customize the system to match your exact needs.
Do I get a dedicated IP address?
Yes, every VPS comes with a dedicated IPv4 address and an IPv6 address. You can manage reverse DNS (PTR) records for your IP addresses directly from the control panel. This is especially important if you plan to run a mail server or other services that require proper DNS configuration.
